Waukon “slows down” Waverly

The Indian Varsity played its first conference game of the season on the road at Waverly Friday December 5th.  The Go-Hawk gym brings back many not so pleasant memories from a season before as Waukon headed into the new gym with an undefeated 2-0 record only to get trounced by a hot HOT shooting Go Hawk squad a year ago.

Once again the Indians came into town undefeated,  however the game started much better for Waukon this time around.   Waukon managed the game and played tough defense in the first half against a good Waverly squad that should win more games than they lose this season.  Waukon led 30-17 at halftime.  The first half was slow in play and riddled with fouls as both teams made the double bonus before half.

Waverly mounted an energetic attack to start the second half and cut the lead to 4 at one point forcing the Indians to take two timeouts and change defensive strategy a bit.  Waukon then righted the ship and got things going again and never relinquished the lead.  With around 5 minutes left in the game the Tribe uncharachteristically went to a slowdown half court offense spreading out the Go Hawk defense and milked the clock.  Despite only hitting about half of their FT’s down the stretch Waukon forced turnovers and only turned the ball over 13 times on the night (a season low) and came out with the 47-37 victory.

Scoring leaders and only scorers for the Indians were: Mary Halvorson with 13 points and 10 rebounds, Logan Hjerleid with 13 points and 6 rebounds, Tatum Meyer with 12 points and Carissa Berger with 9 points and 4 steals.

The Indians move to 4-0 on the season and head to play the second of a 3 game road trip next Tuesday December 9th @ Charles City.
