Indians Take Out The Comets

The Waukon Indian girls took their undefeated record on the road for a makeup game vs Charles City Friday January 2nd.  Charles City has always been a tough place, and a tough team to play and it proved no different Friday afternoon.

In a game that was slow paced and dealt with poor shooting from both sides, Waukon came out victorious 40- 30 in the end and is very happy to be 9-0 (including 4-0 in conference road games).

Waukon got off to an early lead of 4-0 but was quickly matched by a 3 pointer by Comet Abby Lasher to cut the lead to 4-3.  It stayed pretty close from there throughout the first half.  Waukon was in foul trouble early as Logan Hjerleid picked up three fouls in the first four minutes of the game.  She was releived by Senior Brittany Schlake who showed the comets her long range skill by hitting 3 of 7 Three point shots in the first half.  Kristyna Herman was also hit with the foul bug and helped out by Keri Egan.

The Indians took a 23-18 lead into halftime and hoped to improve on that, but the Comets showed their will and tied the game at 23 part way through the third quarter causing the Indians to use a timeout.  From there on out it was all Waukon.  Key buckets by Herman and Hjerleid (including a 3 pointer) pushed the lead to 30-23.

From there Waukon was able to go to a slow down game which spread the court out and forced the Comets to come out of their Zone defense.  Once Charles City came out the Indians diced them up with good passing, patience and easy buckets.

Leading scorer for Waukon was Kristyna Herman with 11, she also had 6 rebounds and an amazing 8 steals.    Schlake had 9 on her 3 Three point shots.  Hjerleid added 7 along with 4 rebounds, Halvorson had 6 points with 10 big rebounds, and Berger had 5 points along with 3 assists and 4 steals.

The game was a typical tough road game vs Charles City who forces you to play a different style. The Indians shot an Abysmal 32% from the floor for the night,  but the win was a good  learning experience for Waukon who had to fight through a few adversities on the evening with foul trouble and not being able to play their normal fast paced game.

Waukon scrimmages tomorrow at Cedar Rapids Kennedy, and then plays @ Spring Grove Monday.

The Waukon JV Also was victorious Friday afternoon at Charles City.

Waukon trailed by a score of 23-18 at halftime.  Coach Schoberlein and the JV girls made some adjustments at halftime and had a great third quater, outscoring the Comets 13-2.  Some nice assists by Erin Decker, and Keisha Troendle helped the way throughout the second half.  Chelsey Dreckman had a couple of key steals, and also led the JV in scoring with 13 points.

JV finished out the game for a final score of 36-33 taking their season record to 7-1 overall.

JV’s next game will be Monday @ Spring Grove.
