Waukon Shoots Down The Comets

The Waukon Indian girls faced Charles City in an important NEIC battle Friday night.  The Comets came out as expected and played a tough zone defense against Waukon trying to shut down Mary Halvorson and make other Indians beat them.

The Indians responded and played a tough tight game in the first half.   Waukon held an 11-10 lead after one quarter, and pushed that lead to 27-20 after the first half.  The Comets got what they wanted as Halvorson only had 4 points at halftime, however what they did not account for was the outside shooting of Carissa Berger.  Berger drained 3 outside jumpers to help put the Indians ahead.

The third Quarter was more of the same as the Indian defense was like the steel curtain holding the Comets to only 4 points in the third quarter.  On  offense,  Halvorson got a couple more open looks and cashed in on almost every shot going 6-8 from the floor.  The Carissa Berger show continued as well as she canned a few more outside shots along with getting a couple of run out layups on nice passes from teamates.

Waukon pushed the lead to 28 points at one time and cruised from there, getting a 57-37 victory which assured them of a peice of the North East Iowa Conference title

Waukon had many players do well on the evening.  Carissa Berger led the way with a career high 24 points.  Mary Halvorson had a good game as well scoring 12 points and pulling down a team high 8 rebounds.  Kristyna Herman had a solid night scoring 8 points and grabbing 5 boards.  Logan Hjerleid contributed across the stat column with 5 points, 6 rebounds, and a team high of 6 assists, and 3 steals.

The Indians played hard solid basketball and only comitted 10 turnovers on the night.

Waukon moves to 14-0 on the season.  Congratulations to Coach Klinge, Coach Sires, and the girls on winning a piece of the conference title and good luck tomorrow vs. MFL

The Waukon JV  also was victorious Friday night vs CC.  The Indians started slow being outscored 11-0 before finally getting on the board.  The young Indians kept their composure however and battled back to take the lead in the second quarter and then started to put the game away in the second half.  Final score was 34-28 Waukon

Chelsey Dreckman led the Indians with 12 points on the night, she was helped out by Chelsea McMillan with 6 points, and Erin Decker had a nice game as well scoring 5 points and making plenty of huslte plays to spark the Indians.
