Waukon falls to Caledonia in tough game

The Indians started the game out in some what of a slump vs the Warriors as a couple of baskets that normally fall didn’t and trailed 13-6 in the early going.  However Waukon got back in the game scoring 2 baskets in the final minute, one each by Mary Halvorson and Carissa Berger to get to the end of the first quarter trailing 13-9.

In the second the Indians played some of their best basketball of the season running and gunning their way to a huge quarter outscoring Caledonia 25-20 to take a 34 -33 lead into the lockeroom.  That quarter was action packed and up and down with both teams making plenty of steals and fast paced baskets.

The third quarter started out the same way for the Tribe as they continued to push the pace.  Waukon got a couple of baskets each from Halvorson and Herman, along with a driving layup by Berger.  Berger also got a offensive rebound and put back to push the Indians lead to 8 at one point in the 3rd.  Then the foul bug took hold and started to hamper the Indians.

Meyer had to sit for quite awhile as she picked up her 4th late in the third, and Kristyna Herman fouled out with 5 35 to go in the game.  The Indians also were called for more fouls than the Warriors down the stretch.  Caledonia cashed in on their FT’s and Waukon went cold from the floor late and ended up losing 68-55.  The game was alot closer than the final score and was a good experience for Waukon as they prepare for the tournament run.

The game was a “State like” atmoshpere, and was a packed gym once again .

Leading the way for Waukon was Mary Halvorson with 21 points and 8 rebounds.  Carissa Berger had 18 points, 7 rebounds and 3 steals.  Kristyna Herman had 8 points, 8 rebounds, 6 steals and 3 assists.

Waukon hosts the New Hampton Chickasaws Wednesday February 18th in the first round of the tournament.  That game will start at 7 pm and will be on KNEI 103.5.

The winner of that game will play the winner of the Decorah vs Oelwein game Saturday February 21st.  That game will also be in Waukon.

Hey girls it was a very exciting one as I listened on and tried to cheer from afar. It seems the Indians always have a slump when they get ahead and someone puts a lid on the basket so nothing will fall. It was a bummer but you gave it a great try. Good luck in tournament play and as always I will be cheering you on from Utah. Give it your all, we need you all to be FIRED UP and ready for anything.
