The Waukon Indian girls are heading to Wells Fargo Arena.  They are one of the 8 remaining teams in class 3A and feeling pretty good about it.

Waukon defeated the Crestwood Cadettes for a third time this season by a score of 44 to 33 in a great team effort and great defensive effort.

The Indians trailed in the early going 12 to 8 and things looked as if it would be intense and tough the whole way.  Waukon came up defensively big as Mary Halvorson and Tatum Meyer both had nice blocked shots to deny the Cadettes from scoring and Meyer also took a charging foul in that stretch.

The Indians went on a 12 to 0 run to end the half holding Crestwood to 2 total points in the second quarter to take a 20 to 12 lead into halftime.

The Indians got timely baskets and defense from everyone on the floor throughout the game.  Cresco cut the lead to 6 half way through the third but the Indians answered with transistion baskets from Carissa Berger and Logan Hjerleid in a 30 second spand to push the lead back to double digits.

Kristyna Hermand did a couple of nice things in the game but was plagued with foul trouble.  Keri Egan stood in for her.  Egan had an awesome game even though she didn’t score.  She had 4 rebounds and 2 steals and held their leading post scorer to only 2 more points the rest of the game.

Waukon kept its lead through the fourth quarter and was never in huge danger due to their free throw shooting as they hit 10 out of 12 down the stretch to seal the victory.

Mary Halvorson led the way with 16 points and 7 rebounds.  Carissa Berger filled the stat sheet up with 12 points,  4 rebounds, 4 assists, and 5 steals.  Logan Hjerleid had 7 points and 4 rebounds including 3 out of 4 ft’s down the stretch.  Tatum Meyer was the floor general once again as she scored 7 points, had 3 boards, 2 steals, a block and a team high 6 assists on the night.

Waukon takes their 20-2 record on to the state tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.  They will play Keokuk at 1pm Tuesday.
