Waukon “Pounds” The Huskies

The #2 ranked Waukon Indian girls basketball team faced off vs the Oelwein Huskies on Friday night after a short week of practice which was held up by winter weather.  The last practice was held on Monday (which was probably the case for most teams in the state) and the rust showed early as the Indians struggled in the early going vs the Huskies.

Mary Halvorson got the first basket down low, and then Logan Hjerleid was on the receiving end of a lob play in which she laid the ball in and got fouled to complete the 3 point play.

With the game tied at 7-7  after the first 4 minutes of the game the Indians put a trade mark run on the Huskies outscoring them 10-0 in about 90 seconds on a flury of turnovers and quick baskets.

Waukon had plenty of 5-0 runs to go with that in the first half as they built the lead up quickly finishing the first half with a 46-16 lead going into the lockeroom.

All around good play and defense got the Indians a runaway win with the score of 80-41.

The Tribe got plenty of offense from multiple players throughout the whole game.  Indian starting point gaurd Tatum Meyer had a nice game as she hit 3-5 from behind the 3 point arc finishing with 11 points and a team high plus career high of 8 assists in the game, also tying for second on the team with 3 steals (tied with 2 other Indians)

Leading the way in scoring for the Indians was Chelsey Dreckman and Carissa Berger with 13 each.  Berger also had a team high 6 steals while going 5-5 from the FT line.  Halvorson had 12 points to go along with a game high of 14 rebounds.  Jordon Reiser also finished with 12 points, ripped down 4 boards and had 3 assists as well.  Logan Hjerleid was the 6th Indian in double digits with 11, also tying for second on the night in steals with 3.

Also to round out the scoring for the Indians were Leeta Sivesind and Keri Egan with 3, and Kristyna Herman with 2

Waukon only had 9 turnovers on the game.  They shot 52% from the floor for the game, including 50% from the 3 point arc and 10-12 from the free throw line for 83%

Waukon(5-0) next travels to Decorah on Tuesday Dec 15th.  Coach Klinge picks up win # 936 and is now two wins shy of tying Bob Mullens all time state coaching wins record.

The Waukon JV was also victorious vs Oelwein by the score of 70-22 in a fast paced game for the Tribe.  The JV was lead by point gaurd Mullen Wacker with 18 points.  Posts Madison Reiser and Alyssa Smith had 12 and 11 respectively for the tribe.  Wing players Cassandra Berger and Shelby Ahlstrom rounded out the scoring with 9 and 8 points on the night.  The JV improves their record to 3-1 on the season.

  1. With Helan losing last night at Linn-Mar, the Indians should rise to #1. Go Indians!!!

  2. waukongirlsbball Says:

That is a possibility, but Linn Mar is one if not the best team in 4A so that loss might not effect the rankings
