#2 Waukon defeats #9 Crestwood To Take NEIC Lead

The Waukon Indians played @ Cresco on Friday night in a pivotal game for the North East Iowa Conference race.  The Indians came into the game 9-1 overall and a 4-0 conference marke, The Cadettes were 10-0 and 4-0 as well in the conference.

In the early going Crestwood took the lead on an inside basket from Jessica Stika and then pushed the lead to 5-3 again on a Mollie Sir basket and foul three point play.  Waukon came out in normal man to man defense and the Cadettes came out in a zone defense seemingly trying to make the Indians beat them from the outside.

This kept the pace of the game slow through the first half.  Waukon got a driving basket from Carissa Berger and then baskets down low from Logan Hjerleid and Kristyna Herman to push their lead 17-11 early in the second quarter.  Cresco and Sir fought back getting a 6-0 run of their own that ended with a fast break pull up jumper by Sir and caused the Indians to take a quick timeout to talk things over.

Herman struck again on an offensive rebound and put back then Berger stole the ensuing inbounds and popped in a basket to push the Tribes lead back to four at the half 21-17 with the Indians in the advantage.

To start  the second half Mary Halvorson started getting more involved, she got a basket down low on the first possesion and then hit two free throws and swiped an offensive board and got a put back as well in the first few minutes of the third for the Tribe to push their lead to 8.

At that point Waukon started to spread the floor against the packed in zone in order to make the Cadettes to come out and play them man to man…..after about a minute of gamesmanship Cresco came out and the Indians started to play more aggressive, running some nice high low, and getting some nice drives and dishes for baskets.

Waukon played one of their best halfs of basketball of the season as the lead swelled to 20 at onen point later in the fourth.  The Indians held and won by a final of 49 -32 to take sole possesion at the top  of the NEIC.

The Indians got a great overall team effort for the win.  Mary Halvorson had a nice game of 19 points 9 rebounds and 3 steals.  Kristyna Herman had 9 points and was a monster on the glass ripping down a team high of 14, Herman also had a team high 5 assists.  Hjerleid and Berger each tallied 6 points, Berger also had 3 steals.  Tatum Meyer and Jordon Reiser scored 5 and 4 respectively and all players did a nice job handling the ball as the Tribe had only 10 turnovers on the night.

A great team defensive effort is a big part of it as well, nearly all of the Cadette’s shots were highly contested and the Tribe did a great job of holding Crestwoods cutting motion offense in check by fighting through, around, and under screens all night.

Waukon was cold from the arc on the night with a 1-10 effort however made up for it more than enough with a 14-17 performance from the free throw line….Halvorson was 9-9 herself.

Halvorson also broke the all time 5 on 5 rebounding record the previous game vs Spring Grove.  Christa Hammel was the all time leader with 588 rebounds.  Halvorson surpassed the great Hammel late in the game Tuesday.  Congratulations.

The Indians host Turkey Valley Saturday night, game starts at 5 pm, it is a boys/girls double hearder, no JV games.
