Indians Dominate, Milestones Fall

The Waukon Indians and Coach Gene Klinge had a couple of chances to make history and fell short losing 2 games in a row…..Sometimes things just work out the way they should. Coach Klinge and his Indians in front of a huge crowd defeated MFL MarMac 88-60 tonite. The win is #1000 in Coach Klinge’s 51 year career and Senior forward Daneshia Snitker also notched her 1000th point of her career as she poured in 32 on the night.

Snitker made the first 5 baskets of the game as Waukon led 10-0 in the early going scoring her 1000th, and 1001st point of her career on a short jumper with about 3 and a half minutes left in the first period. The lead grew from there and the game was in hand early in the 2nd half. Coach Klinge becomes the becomes the 9th Coach in history to reach the milestone in the country. he is now 1000-239 in 51 seasons of coaching. Klinge won his first 817 games at West Central, he is in his 10th year at Waukon.

Snitker became just the 3rd Indian player to score 1000 points in her career and trails only Samantha Reiser(1559), and Mary Halvorson(1444) on the Waukon 5 on 5 scoring list. Klinge and the Indians feel there is more work to be done yet this year. Klinge stated after the game that he is proud of the accomplishment but is glad it is over and now the team can focus on moving forward with the end of the season and making a push towards the playoffs.

Waukon shot an amazing 40-64 from the floor and had 30 assists on those 40 baskets. Great team basketball and a great night at Waukon with the student section chanting “Coach K, One K” at the end of the game.

Alyssa Collins torched the nets with 28 points on the night and had 6 rebounds, swiped 4 steals and stuffed 6 shots. Kiersten Christianson had 11 points as she drained 3-4 from beyond the arc and also had 7 assists. Courtney Wikan had 5 points and a team high 9 assists for the game. Abie Mellick scored a basket and had 5 assists and 4 steal. Corbin Snitker rounded out the Indian scoring effort with 6 points on the night.

Waukon faces off at home vs Praire Du Chein on Monday night, and then host Crestwood in the first round of playoffs on Saturday February 9th.

Indians battle Caledonia, fall short in the end

The Indians suffer their first losing streak of the season as they drop games on back to back nights. Waukon was defeated by the Caledonia Warriors on Saturday night by the score of 53-48. Alyssa Collins led the Indians as she scored 25 points. Daneshia Snitker dumped in 15. Waukon trailed early, followed up with a valiant run to take the lead and hold it until the under 9 minutes to play in the 2nd half. Caledonia battled back to overcome the Indian rally and held onto the win.

The Indians will have to wait til Tuesday for their next chance to win their 14th game of the season, which will be Coach Gene Klinge’s 1000th of his 51 year career.

Indians get nipped by New Hampton

Waukon suffered a 54-51 loss in a great basketball game Friday night.

The Indians trailed early, recovered, held the lead for most of the 2nd, 3rd and early fourth quarter but New Hampton kept coming and denied the Indians a win, a win that would have been number 1000 for Gene Klinge.

Waukon will look to rebound tomorrow night in a tough match up across state lines against Caledonia MN.

Indians Step up Defense, Defeat Decorah

The Waukon Indians played a near flawless first half limiting their turnovers on the offensive side of the ball, effectively breaking the Viking full court pressure and playing a great defensive game as they took a 33-14 lead going into halftime.

Waukon kept the ball moving, showed patients on offense and pushed on for a 57-44 victory over the Decorah Vikings on Tuesday night.

The victory moves Class 3A #13 ranked Waukon to 13-3 on the season and 7-3 NEIC record. Coach Gene Klinge wins his 999th career game as he moves closer to becoming the 9th coach in the USA to get 1000 victories.

Daneshia Snitker scored near her state leading pace with 24 points while pulling down 6 rebounds and dishing out 4 assists. Alyssa Collins dumped in 22 points and pulled down 9 rebounds. Kiersten Christianson scored 8 points, grabbed 5 boards and had 3 assists on the night.

Waukon head to play New Hampton on the road Friday night, and then will go across state line to play Caledonia MN Saturday evening.

Indians get big win vs Charles City

The Waukon Indians were hosting the Charles City Comets on Friday January 18th. The Comets were just recently ranked in the top 15 of Class 4A in the State of Iowa and fell out of the rankings after a loss to Decorah the week before.

Waukon battled in a close game the whole way and came out with a 58-56 win despite the Comets being on fire from downtown making 7 three point makes in the first half and then 2 more in the 2nd half.

The Indians were led by Alyssa Collins with 22 points and 12 rebounds along with 3 blocked shots. Daneshia Snitker dropped in 20 points. Eli Ronan had a nice game as she scored 9 points and pulled down 9 rebounds.

This win moves waukon to 12-3 on the season and in sole possesion of 2nd place in the NEIC. Coach Klinge records his 998th career win.

Waukon plays at Decorah next Tuesday, at New Hampton next Friday and at Caledonia next Saturday.

Indians fall to WSR again

The Waukon Indians headed on the road to play vs the #3 ranked 4A team in the state, Waverly Shell-Rock.

WSR jumped out to an early 8 point lead and was able to hold the advantage for most of the game. Waukon battled hard but could not get over the hump against a very very good WSR team.

The Indians fall to 11-3 on the season and now get ready to host #14 ranked (class 4A) Charles City.

Indians Handle Huskies, Snitker Drops 40!

The Waukon Indian girls basketball team had a make up game tonite at home vs the Oelwein Huskies. Waukon hosted the Huskies with KWWL sports crew in house for an interview and to take game highlights. The Lights were on and the Indians Daneshia Snitker performed big as she scorched the Huskies with a career high and Waukon Indians single game record of 40 points. Snitker broke former Indian great and all stater Samantha Reiser single game record of 37 points from 04-05.

Waukon got off to a slow start with an 11-9 lead after one quarter but turned things on after that. Snitker did her damage in just 3 quarters of play as well as the Indians played all varsity players with the game in hand late in the 3rd and 4th quarter. Waukon won the game 60 to 46.

Waukon junior 6’1″ center Alyssa Collins also set a single game record for the Tribe on the night as she had 10 blocked shots, breaking former Indian Jenny Lepperts record of 9 from the 95-96 season.

Waukon moves to 11-2 on the season and Coach Gene Klinge recorded his 997th career win.
