Indians fall short at Kee High in season opener

The Waukon Indian Girls Basketball team opened the season on the road at number 4 class 1A ranked Kee High on Friday Nov 18th.  The young Indian squad came up short with a 64-50 defeat.

The Indians kept the game close in the first half despite having 3 starters drawing 2 fouls each in the first 4 minutes of the game.  Kee High took advantage from the line and also advantage of the Indians having to play more conservative defense and took a 32-24 lead into the halftime break.

Kee started with a small run in the third period but the Indians answered back again cutting the deficet to less than 10 before the 4th period started.  Kee kept the lead throughout however and came away with the win.

Waukon was lead in scoring by sophomore guard Aubree Cota who finished with 13 points in her varsity debut.  Sophomore forward Lauren Griffith tallied 9 points, 3 assists and 2 steals in a short night due to foul trouble.  Sophomore forward Sydney Ross stuffed the stat sheet as she dumped in 8 points and lead the Indians on the glass with 9 rebounds while also dishing out 3 assists and swiping 3 steals. Sophomore forward McKenzie Cooper also scored 8 and pulled down 6 rebounds.  Sophomore Berklee Hanson finished with 7 points while grabbing 4 rebounds and swiping 3 steals as well!

Senior forward Regan Wasson also scored a basket and pulled down 2 rebounds and Sophomore guard Ally Gotz drained a 3 point attempt to finsish with 3 points on the night.

Waukon next faces New Hampton on the road Friday Dec 2nd!


The Waukon JV was victorious in the first game Friday as they defeated Kee high JV 47-12.  Leading the JV effort was Carley Sweeney, Faith Palmer, and Ally Goltz.  Game stats to be posted later


Indian JV/Varsity set to start season

The Waukon Indian girls basketball team opens the season Friday November 18th as they travel to their in county opponent class 1A #4 ranked Kee High.

Waukon lost to the Kee Hawks last season 56-38 and the previous season 61-39.  Kee High is coming off a record breaking season last year as they finished 22-3 and ended with a close loss in the State quarterfinals.  Kee High returns 3 starters from last season and 3 more players that came off the bench.

Waukon is coming off a 9-12 season and is a very young team overall, however they return six letter winners who logged valuable experience and minutes last season.

2015-16 2nd team NEIC all conference point guard Maddie Ahlstrom will not start the season as she is rehabbing from off season knee injury and is getting closer to return each day.

The Tribe will look to fill those shoes with a committee of guards that include sophmores Aubree Cota, Ally Goltz and Berklee Hanson, all of those players have also seen time on the wing on JV last season as well.  Sophomore guard/forwards Molly Brodahl and Grace Howe also look to give minutes and earned valuable court time on JV last season

The lone Indian senior this season is 5’8″ forward Regan Wasson who averaged 6.8 points a game last season and will see action at both wing and post play.  6’1″ sophomore forward McKenzie Cooper also averaged 6.8 ppg last season while leading the Tribe in rebounding a season ago, her new starting post partner will be 6’0″ sophomore forward Sydney Ross who put up some impressive number on JV early last year and earned varsity minutes as the season progressed.

Lauren Griffith, a 5’8″ Sophmore wing/forward will start opposite Wasson on the wing for the Indians.  Griffith logged alot of varsity minutes last season which lead to her finishing in the top five in scoring, rebounding, steals and assists for the Tribe a year ago.

Junior 5’8″ forward Carley Sweeney and 6’0″ sophomore Brigid Berns could also see time down low for the Indians this season.

JV game starts at 6:15 tomorrow night with the Varsity game to follow at aproximately 7:30.  Good Luck to the Lady Indians tomorrow and this season!


Indian Jr High teams move to 4-0 each with wins over Decorah

The Waukon 7th grade girls basketball team hosted the Decorah Vikings on Thursday November 17th.  Waukon played with a ton of intensity and used full court pressure to force turnovers and score on the run multiple times to defeat the Vikings 39-26!

Guard Brinley Jones had a spectacular game as she lead the Tribe with 23 points.  Guards Justine Sullivan and Kiara Ahlstrom added 8 and five points respectively in the victory.


The Waukon 8th grade girls were on the road and handed their Northeast Iowa Conference foe a 38-12 defeat Thursday night.  The 8th grade Tribe also used fool court man to man pressure defense to force turnovers and score in transition.

Guard Regan Griffith lead the Indian attack tonight with 11 points.  Forwards Margaret Wacker and Annika Headington both dropped in seven points, Wacker also lead the team in rebounds for the game with 4.  Guards Ella Hermeier and Mia Strub scored five and four points respectively in the win.


Indian 8th and 7th grade get wins vs Cresco

Tuesday November 15th the Waukon Indian 8th grade girls basketball team played an excellent game and were victorious 46-8 over the Crestwood Cadets.  Waukon ran the floor and scored in transition multiple times in the game.

8th grade was lead in scoring by forward Annika Headington as she poured in 16 points, forward Margaret Wacker finished with 7 points.  Guards Mia Strub, Regan Griffith, and Ella Hermeier added six points each in a balanced scoring effort!


The Waukon Indian 7th grade team was also winners as they handed Cresco a 36-5 loss. Guard Brinley Jones lead the Tribe in scoring with 15, guard Kiara Ahlstrom finished with 9 points and forward Emily Beiber added 6 points on the night

Indian Jr High teams get the W again!

Waukon 8th graders traveled to NFV on Thursday and came out victorious 27-21in their 2nd win of the season.

Forward Annika Headington lead the Tribe with 16 points.  Forward Margaret Wacker and guard Ella Hermeier scored 4 appiece and guard Regan Griffith added 3 points for the Indians victory!

The Waukon 7th grade team also cam out in front with a 31-13 win.  Forward Brenna Berns lead the Indians with 10 points, guards Kiara Ahlstrom and Brinley Jones added 7 each in the victory!

Indian Jr High girls start season with wins!

The Waukon Indian 7th and 8th grade opened their Jr. High season tonight as the 8th graders hosted the New Hampton Chickasaws and the 7th graders traveled to New Hampton.


The 8th graders got off to hot start and did not look back vs the Chickasaws.  Forwards Annika Headington and Margaret Wacker scored 14 and 10 points.  Guard Regan Griffith poured in 9 respectively for the Indians.  Also adding to the scoring column for the Tribe were guards Bailey Shaffer and Mia Strub and forward Betsy Anderson in a 45-4 win.

8th graders travel to NFV on Thursday


Waukon 7th also used an early game surge to defeat New Hampton 50-4 in their matchup on the road.  Guard Kiara Ahlstrom scored 14 points, Guard Brinley Jones dropped in 10 points and forward Justine Sullivan finished with 8 to lead the Tribe.  Also adding points in the game were guards Hailey Houg, and Faith Schulte and forwards Ella O’Neill and Brenna Berns.

Indian 7th graders host NFV on Thursday.

2016-17 Season ready to tip off!

Waukon Indian girls basketball is back in action as the official first day of the 2016-17 season starts today with teams having their first practices statewide.

The Indians are coming off a 9-12 season from a year ago and have a roster that returns 68% of their scoring from last season.

Returning players from last years Varsity squad looks to be Sr. Regan Wasson, Jr. Carley Sweeney and Sophmore’s Maddie Ahlstrom, Berklee Hanson, Lauren Griffith, Sydney Ross and Mckenzie Cooper.

Waukon will practice this week and head to Mason City for a scrimmage on Saturday November 12th, have another scrimmage Tuesday November 15th at the MFL Jamboree and then tip the regular season off vs a top ranked class 1A opponent @Kee High Friday November 18th.
