Indian Varsity split pair of games

The Indian girls basketball team traveled to Caledonia on Thursday Dec 8th to take on the always tough Caledonia Warriors.  Waukon struggled early with the Warrior pressure but finished the first half on a small run and trailed 29-22 at the halftime break.  The Indians also started off the second half hot as they cut the once 15 point defecit down to just three points trailing 45-42 with a quarter to play.  However the Warriors regained their touch and pushed their lead to finish with a 67-52 defeat of Waukon.

Sophomore forward Lauren Griffith scored a career high 17 points, swiped a team high 8 steals, dished out a team high 4 assists and grabbed 5 rebounds.  Sophomore forward Sydney Ross scored a career high 16 points while ripping down a team high 12 rebounds for her first Double/Double of the season.  Sophomore post McKenzie Cooper was just a point and rebound away as she finished with 9 points and 9 rebounds.

The Indians then played their first home game of the season on Friday December 9th as they hosted the Oelwein Huskies.  The Indians started a bit slow and traded the lead back and forth in the early going.  Late in the second period the Indians had a small surge and took an eight point lead into the halftime break.

The second half belonged to the Indians as they finished strong and handed Oelwein a 56-30 defeat. Sophomore forward Sydney Ross poured in a career high 22 points on the night to lead the Tribe.  Sophomore guard Berklee Hanson hit double figures with 10 points.

Waukon Jr High teams have a 3-1 week

The Waukon 8th grade girls started the week off on Tuesday Nov 29th with a 25 to 18 win over the Decorah Vikings.  Guard Regan Griffith lead in scoring with 12 points, and forward Annika Headington dumped in 11 for the Indians.

The 8th graders traveled to New Hampton on Friday Dec 2nd and defeated the Chickasaws 34-6.  The Indians were lead by forward Margaret Wacker who had 12 points.  Forward Annika Headington also hit double figures with 10 points.  Guard Maddie Mellick also added four points for the Indians.

The Waukon 7th grade girls traveled to Decorah on Tuesday Dec 29th and suffered their first defeat of the season with a close 34-31 loss to the Vikings.  Guard Brinley Jones lead the Indians with 9 points.  Point Guard Kiara Ahlstrom had 8 points.  Emily Beiber, Faith Schulte and Hailey Houg added four points each for the Tribe.

The 7th Graders got back on the winning track Friday as they hosted the New Hampton Chickasaws.  Waukon got a big win with a 44-8 score.  Guard Justine Sullivan lead the Indians with 14 points.  Point guard Kiara Ahlstrom dumped in 11 points while forwards Brinley Jones and Brenna Berns scored 8 and 6 points in the winning effort!

Indians split pair of weekend games

The Waukon Indian girls basketball team lost their first NEIC game on Friday Dec 2nd to New Hampton by the score of 59-37.  Waukon cut the Chickasaw lead down to seven at the end of the third quarter.  However a pair of 3 point baskets made by the Chickasaws to start the fourth quarter put the game out of reach.  Sophmore post Sydney Ross lead the Indians with 14 points and 7 rebounds Friday night.

The Indians dealt with a a quick turnaround as they traveled to Wartburg to play vs Denver in the holiday classic as they have the past few years.  The Indians overcame a very cold shooting effort in the beginning of the game and into the third quarter which saw them fall behind 22-15.

The Indians got things going with some pressure defense in the fourth quarter and got a few shots to drop along with getting the the charity stripe more than a dozen times in the fourth and pulled out a 38-31 win to get their first of the season.  Sophmore forward Lauren Griffith lead the Indians with 14 points vs the Cyclones
