Waukon Girls Win Twice in 2nd Week

The Waukon Indian girls basketball team hosted New Hampton Friday December 1st in their first NEIC matchup of the season.

The Indians and Chickasaws traded baskets throughout the first quarter ending in a 13 all tie.  New Hampton went on a 9-2 run and held a 22-15 lead mid way through the second quarter and seemed to have momentum in their favor.

The Tribe turned things around in a hurry and scored a slew of baskets in transition to end the quarter on a 19-2 run and hold a 34-24 halftime lead.

Waukon got a couple of buckets early in the 3rd period and then began using a slow down half court approach to try and get the trailing Chickasaws out of their packed in zone defense.  The Indians moved the ball around and ran about 4 minutes off the clock over about four possessions.

The Indians kept their pressure defense and transition offense on full alert however and outscored New Hampton 9-3 in the 3rd period.

Waukon held strong with their lead and finished off the game with a 48-32 victory.

Maddie Ahlstrom lead the Indians with 14 points, 2 assists and 3 steals.  Sydney Ross scored 9 points and tied for the team lead of 7 rebounds with fellow twin tower McKenzie Cooper.  Annika Headington also scored 9 points for the Tribe.

The Indians were on the road to Upper Iowa University for a non conference game vs Hudson and Saturday December 2nd.

Waukon used a variety of pressure defenses and scored on the run early and often vs the Pirates.   Waukon jumped out to a 35-9 lead at halftime with all Indian varsity players entering the game at some point of the first period.

The Tribe played the whole roster quite a bit in the 2nd half and worked on attacking half court defense with multiple lineup combinations.  End result was a 2nd win in as many days as the Tribe came out victorious 48-24.

Annika Headington lead the Tribe with 12 points as she was a perfect 8-8 from the charity stripe.  Maddie Ahlstrom scored 11 points and dished out 4 assists in limited action.  Lauren Griffith scored 9 points on 4-5 FG attempts on the day.  Six other Indians scored in the win and the teams overall defense was sharp again in the win.
