Indians Split In Last Weeks Contests

The Waukon Indian girls basketball team hosted the always tough Caledonia Warriors on Thursday December 7th in a non conference contest.  Waukon trailed early by the score of 12-4, and then rattled off 8 straight points to tie the contest early in the 2nd quarter.  The Warriors however answered with a run of their own to take a 31-20 lead into halftime.

Waukon struggled throughout the game vs Caledonia’s 3/4 court zone pressure and the Warriors were on fire from outside the arc draining 8 three pointers.  In the end the Indians were defeated by a score of 57 to 36.  Ten of the Indian’s 12 varsity players scored during the game and were lead by Junior post Brigid Berns with 7 points on the night.  Annika Headington had a team high 5 rebounds and Maddie Ahlstrom dished out a team high 3 assists.

The Indians did not have much time to recover or regroup as they traveled to Oelwein the next evening to take on the Huskies.  Waukon jumped out to an early lead using full court pressure and transition offense to take an early 17-3 lead.  The early offense propelled the Tribe to keep surging as they lead 33-6 at the half.

The Tribe’s pressure defense backed to the half-court fashion in the 2nd half but it did not drop in intensity.  All 12 Varsity players played aggressive defense throughout the game leading to an 58-11 victory.  The 11 points allowed is a new Waukon girls basketball record.  Previously held by the 02/03 team which gave up 14 points in their contest.

Junior guard Aubree Cota lead the Indians with 13 points on the night.  Maddie Ahlstrom finished with 11 points.  Annika Headington dumped in 10 points and tied for the team lead in rebounds with Sydney Ross and Brigid Berns.  Berns also scored 9 points for the Tribe.  Ally Goltz lead the team with 3 assists and Grace Howe lead the Tribe with 3 steals on the evening.

The Indians are now 3-2 on the season and host class 3A #2 ranked Cresco on Tuesday December 12th and then travel to Waverly Friday December  15th to take on the Go Hawks.
