3A #7 Ranked Waukon Defeats #11 Ranked Crestwood

Waukon traveled to Crestwood Tuesday Dec 11th to take on the defending 3A State Champions.  Crestwood lost 4 starters from that team but has filled in their lineup around University Iowa Commit 6’3″ post player Sharon Goodman.

Both teams traded baskets in a highly contested first period ending in an 11 all tie.  Waukon started to distance as they claimed an 18-11 lead in the 2nd quarter with back to back 3 points makes by Maddie Ahlstrom.  Crestwood battled back and took advantage of a handful of Tribe mistakes in the latter part of the 2nd period.  Waukon held 24-23 point lead at the half.

The Indians played a tough 3rd period defensively and took a 36 to 29 lead into the final frame.  Waukon kept the defensive pressure on and packed the lane to hold Crestwood to 2 points in the final frame and posted a 42-31 victory moving them to 4-0 on the season.

Lauren Griffith and Maddie Ahlstrom led the Indians with 14 points.  Griffith posted a team high 12 rebounds, while Ahlstrom had a team high of 5 assists.  Annika Headington added 10 points while swiping a team high of 6 steals.

Mckenzie Cooper, Sydney Ross and Margaret Wacker combined for 1 point on the night but their team like effort defensively inside held Goodman to a season low of 17 points on the evening and helped the Indians outrebound the Cadets 36 to 27, both key points in the Indian Win.

Waukon hosts Class 4A #13 rated Waverly Shell Rock (5-1, 3-0 NEIC) Friday Dec 14th in a boys/girls triple header.

Indians Move to 3-0 with Dominating Win over Oelwein

Waukon used a huge 27 point 2nd quarter to put the game out of question in a hurry Friday Dec 7th vs Oelwein.

The Tribe held the Huskies top scorer Drew Becker to 4 points and ended with a 57-19 victory moving their season record to 3-0.

Sydney Ross controlled the paint and had team highs of 15 points and 7 rebounds.  Maddie Ahlstrom had 10 points and team highs of 4 assists and 6 steals.  Lauren Griffith and Annika Headington both scored 9 points in the Indian win.

Indians Defeat Chickasaws

Game two of the year was also on the Road for the Tribe as they traveled to New Hampton on Friday Nov 30th.

Waukon used fast paced pressure defense to jump to an 18-8 first quarter advantage.  Both teams traded baskets through the 2nd period as the Tribe took a 30 to 19 advantage into the locker room.

The second half flew by and was low scoring as the Indians kept the control game in play for most of the half and choosing shots wisely to keep their lead at 11 or more the whole way and ended with a 43-29 victory.

Annika Headington lead the Indians with 14 points and 4 steals.  Maddie Ahlstrom scored 12 points and had 3 assists.  Lauren Griffith and 11 points and a team high 9 rebounds in the Indian win.

Indian Girls Win Season Opener

The Waukon Indian girls basketball team traveled to Kee High for their season opener on Tuesday Nov 20th.

Waukon held a 17 to 11 lead at the end of the first period and pushed their advantage to 22-14 half way through the 2nd period.  Kee High then applied some pressure and the Indians had a flurry of turnovers to give the Hawks 8 points in about a 50 second span.  Waukon led 26-25 at the half.

The 3rd quarter played about like the first with teams trading baskets until the last minute of the period where Waukon took a 6 point lead into the final frame.

The Tribe controlled the pace and extended their lead by taking smart shots and making Kee High extend and resort to fouling late in the game.  The Indians ended with a 50-37 victory.

Maddie Ahlstrom led the Tribe with 16 points and 5 assists, while also tied for a team high 7 steals.  Annika Headington had 11 points and 10 rebounds.  Sydney Ross and Lauren Griffith both chipped in 8 points for the evening.
