The Lady Indians started their 3 game road trip to end the pre holiday portion of the season Friday December 15th as they traveled to Waverly to take on the class 4A #15 ranked Go Hawks.

Its the longest bus ride each year for the Indians and it always seemed longer because of the results the past 7 years as Waukon had not beat the Go Hawks since February 1st 2010.

The Indians trailed 8-2 early on and seemed as if it might be another long ride home, However the Tribe rallied and ended the first period in a 13 all tie.  Waukon then cranked up the pressure to start the 2nd period and opened with three straight steals and transition baskets.  The Tribe took a 32-24 lead into the halftime break.

Waukon stayed hungry and aggressive into the third period as they stretched their lead to 13 on a three point bomb by Maddie Ahlstrom.

The Go Hawks did not go away as they clawed back during the 4th period at one point cutting the deficit to just 4 after a pair of long range shots.  The Indians kept calm and worked the ball against the Go Hawk press, valued the ball and earned trips to the charity stripe.  They did not shoot great in the end at the line but they shot well enough to pull out a 53-46 victory!

Ahlstom lead the Tribe with 17 points.  Annika Headington added 12 and Lauren Griffith dropped in 10 to lead the Indians.  The 3 headed post of Cooper, Berns, and Ross controlled the paint defensively and combined for 10 points as well for the Indians.

Waukon is now 4-3 overall and 3-1 in the NEIC.  Waukon’s three losses are to Crestwood, Kee High and Caledonia who is a combined 21-1 at this point of the season.

The Indians look to finish the 2017 portion of their season as they travel to Clayton Ridge Monday the 18th and then to Decorah Thursday the  21st.

The Waukon Indian girls basketball team hosted the Cadets of Crestwood on Tuesday December 12th and were defeated by a score of 66-37.

Crestwood is as good as advertised as they shot the ball extremely well from the floor and from the free throw line as they hit 14-18 freebies.

The Indians showed signs of life throughout the game however as they still had it at a ten point game more than half way through the 2nd quarter and had opportunities to cut into that lead.  However foul trouble put the Cadets on the line multiple times at the end of the first half seeing them baloon their lead 40-20 at the break.  Waukon came out and did not give up in the third period as they were outscored by just two points in the third frame.  Crestwood flexed their top talent however and put the game away.

Waukon struggled throughout the game vs Caledonia’s 3/4 court zone pressure and the Warriors were on fire from outside the arc draining 8 three pointers.  In the end the Indians were defeated by a score of 57 to 36.  Ten of the Indian’s 12 varsity players scored during the game and were lead by Junior post Brigid Berns with 7 points on the night.  Annika Headington had a team high 5 rebounds and Maddie Ahlstrom dished out a team high 3 assists.

The Indians did not have much time to recover or regroup as they traveled to Oelwein the next evening to take on the Huskies.  Waukon jumped out to an early lead using full court pressure and transition offense to take an early 17-3 lead.  The early offense propelled the Tribe to keep surging as they lead 33-6 at the half.

The Tribe’s pressure defense backed to the half-court fashion in the 2nd half but it did not drop in intensity.  All 12 Varsity players played aggressive defense throughout the game leading to an 58-11 victory.  The 11 points allowed is a new Waukon girls basketball record.  Previously held by the 02/03 team which gave up 14 points in their contest.
